Yesterday the International Olympic Committee (IOC) revealed its list of the candidates cities to organise the 2016 summer Olympic Games.
The selected cities are:
- Chicago (United States)
- Madrid (Spain)
- Rio de Janeiro (Brazil)
- Tokyo (Japan)
These four cities was selected betwenn 7 candidates. In addition to the 4 cities selected, Bakou (Azerbaïdjan), Doha (Qatar) and Prague (Czech republic) were not selected by the commission.

Kieren Perkins, Olympic Champion, says the Australian Olympic Committee has no choice but to expel Nick D’Arcy from the Beijing team after serious assault charges were laid against him.
The swimming fraternity was last night divided on D’Arcy’s fate after he was involved in a brawl at a Sydney bar that left former national team member Simon Cowley with a shattered nose, eye socket and jaw.
New South Wales Police yesterday hit D’Arcy, 20, with assault and grievous bodily harm charges. Read the rest of this entry »
The International Olympic Committe asked China to promise not to delay transmissions of the Beijing games, after France raised concerns about Chinese television’s censoring of Tibet protests at the torch-lighting ceremony in Greece this week.
French TV executives have asked the European Broadcasting Union to extract guarantees from Beijing that transmissions will be live and uninterrupted even if protests take place.
Neither the IOC nor the EBU said they had any grounds to believe Beijing would renege on pledges for live transmission made two years ago and reaffirmed in January. Read the rest of this entry »
The sacred Olympic Flame arrived at Skidra on Thursday, the third stop on the fourth day of the Torch Relay in Greece.
A reporter interviewed a 17-year-old torchbearer from the city. The torchbearer told the reporter that he studies Taekwondo, and took part in the World Taekwondo Championships in Beijing last year.
He said Beijing’s venues and buildings have left an indelible impression on him. The youngster will miss this year’s Olympics due to his young age, but has his sights set on the London Olympic Games. Read the rest of this entry »
On Wednesday, the sacred flame of the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games returned to the hometown of Demetrios Vikelas, the first president of the International Olympic Committee (IOC).
“This year marks the centennial of the death of Demetrios Vikelas, and we’ll commemorate this event,” Veria Mayor Charoula Ousoultzoglou-Georgiadi was quoted by Xinhua as saying. “He grew up here and loved this city, we are proud of him,” she added.

At this point, the next Olympics Games are shaping up as a disaster.
The violent police action in Tibet of the past two weeks make wonder if the Chinese government is fundamentally unfit to host an Olympics.
Officials there have violated the basic spirit of the event and reneged on every promise they made to the International Olympic Committee about their willingness to accommodate the world. When anyone publicly tries to hold them to account they charge critics with trying “sabotage” the Games.

Carlos Arthur Nuzman, president of the Brazilian Olympic Committee, said activists will not overshadow the harmonizing spirit of the Olympics.
“We fully support the International Olympic Committee and the organizing committee, who are working to offer a great edition of the Olympic Games to athletes and to the world,” Nuzman said in a statement. “The Olympics is a magical moment to promote the integration of different people, races and religions, not an opportunity to promote a break between the parties.” Read the rest of this entry »
